As I was asked, here is the lyrics of the song from the previous post. I will update this post as soon as I manage to make an adequate translation.

"Homenaje a un Boga Taganguero"
Rolando Sanchez

Viejo boguis! tu no me quisiste llevar a ellas.

UPDATE:

Vocabulary clarifications:

  • Canalete: Paddle of very wide end that is used to direct and propel a canoe
  • Boga: Fishermen in Taganga use canoes to do their trade, the "Boga" is the fisherman who sits at the end of and who directs the canoe
  • Trasmallo: Fishing net used by the fishermen of Taganga that consist of an arrangement of three superimposed nets, the central one much finer than the other two
  • Taganguero: Person from Taganga
  • Bongos: A kind of drum used in tropical Latin America music.

Other Clarifications:

  • In spanish the preposition "de" can mean "belonging to" and "originally coming from" so whenever he uses it to imply both things it will be translated as of, for example: "old boga de la mar" can mean old boga that belongs to the sea or old boga that came from the sea.
  • This is song is very hard to translate without destroying its beauty, I have introduced minor changes in an attempt to preserve its beauty.
  • Finally I want to highlight that this song was composed by Rolando for an old fisherman called Julio Matos who is his friend and who now is suffering from the Parkinson syndrome.

"Homage for a Boga Taganguero"

Sail Julio Matos, old boga of the ocean
you who sail the stars, a taganguero in open sea.

You sink the canalete and avoid the underwater reefs
while telling stories that were handed down from long ago,
from your ancestors, all long dead but alive in the flower of your memories,
in your steps, in your smile and in the bongos.

Row beside the stars, no one belongs to them more than you,
Old boga that sails the firmament.

Sail Julio Matos, old boga of the ocean
you who sail the stars, a taganguero in open sea.

Laying the trasmallo, history sees you pass by,
sinking the canalete, and your voice is heard strongly,
by all your grandsons,
they are restless because of the world they see,
but you are true, true are your eyes, true your smile and true your tales.

Row beside the stars, no one belongs to them more than you,
Old boga that sails the firmament.

Hear me Julio Matos, sailor of the stars!
Old Boga! You didn't want to take with them.
